Formed as the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company in 1911, renamed International Business Machines in 1924 under Thomas J. Watson Sr. IBM dominated punched-card data processing, bet the company on System/360 in 1964, and defined the mainframe era — then nearly died missing the PC it created.

Its research arm generated a disproportionate share of the field's foundations: FORTRAN (1957), the relational model (1970), SQL, RISC architecture, DRAM, the floppy disk, and the hard drive itself.
