'A better DOS than DOS, a better Windows than Windows' — the workplace shell that lost to marketing; ArcaOS keeps the license alive.

OS/2 (1987) was IBM and Microsoft's joint successor to DOS — the first commercial OS with a protected-mode GUI, a real multitasking model, and the Workplace Shell object-oriented desktop. Microsoft left for Windows; IBM finished 2.0 (1992) alone.\n\nIBM sold it to Serenity Systems in 1996; ArcaOS maintains it today — a 35-year-old OS still commercially supported.
