CP-67 was IBM's first virtual-machine system — the 1967 pairing of the Cambridge Scientific Center's CP monitor with the modified S/360-67, the first machine with hardware address translation.\n\nIts descendent VM/CMS made 'each user their own machine' practical — and proved a machine could run multiple OSes simultaneously, the idea that defines modern virtualization.
