Bell Labs Alive
The most productive research organization in computing history — transistor, information theory, Unix, C, C++, the laser. Nine Nobel Prizes; now Nokia Bell Labs.
Founded January 1, 1925 as the joint research arm of AT&T and Western Electric. Its model — deep pockets, no product pressure, hire the best and leave them alone — produced the transistor, the laser, information theory, radio astronomy, the cosmic microwave background, and the charge-coupled device.
The Murray Hill computing tradition gave the world Unix, C, C++, and Plan 9 — and after Lucent's collapse and the Alcatel merger, the lab survives as Nokia Bell Labs, a fraction of its former self but still publishing.
