Plan 9's little sibling with a VM inside — Limbo language, Dis VM, applications portable across everything; sold to Vita Nuova, then faded.

Created by Bell Labs

Inferno (1996) was Bell Labs' post-Plan-9 experiment — a portable OS running as an application on any host, with the Limbo language, Dis VM, and the same 'everything is a file' namespace over a 4 MB runtime.\n\nCommercialized by Lucent's Inferno Business Unit, it never found a market; released as open source in 2000, maintained by Vita Nuova.
