The first workstation company — DOMAIN/OS and networked computing before Sun was a household word. HP bought it in 1989.

Poduska's Apollo (1980) beat Sun to market with the DN100 — 68000-based workstations on a proprietary token ring, the DOMAIN/OS distributed file system, and the 'workstation' concept itself: personal machines sharing a network, not a timeshared terminal.

Apollo led the market until Sun's cheaper approach won; HP bought it in April 1989 for $476 million, and Apollo's DOMAIN technology folded into HP's workstation line.
