Cutler brought VMS's instincts to Microsoft's kernel — the line that unified with consumer Windows in XP and still runs the world's desktops.

Dave Cutler's team shipped Windows NT 3.1 in 1993 — a portable, preemptive, protected-mode OS with the Win32 personality on top, HAL below, and no DOS anywhere. It was a VMS descendant in disguise; 'WNT' is 'VMS' shifted one letter.\n\nNT 4.0 (1996) made it the server standard; the kernel now underlies every current Windows — XP unified consumer/NT in 2001.
