The media OS built from scratch — pervasive multithreading, a database filesystem; Palm bought the corpse in 2001, Haiku rebuilds it today.

BeOS (1995) was a clean-slate media OS — pervasive multithreading, a 64-bit journaled filesystem with database attributes, a Tracker file manager that treated files as queries. It ran circles around contemporaries on dual-PPC hardware.\n\nBe Inc. was sold to Palm in 2001; Haiku OS reimplemented it open-source and is still developed — R1/beta4 shipped 2022.
