Android (2008) is Linux+Java for phones — Andy Rubin's company acquired by Google 2005, shipped on the G1 2008 with a custom Java VM (Dalvik, then ART), and the only OS to reach billions of devices.\n\nIt owns ~70% of mobile OS share; its Linux+Java architecture spawned a patent war with Oracle that reached the Supreme Court (Google won, 2021).
