The duct tape of the internet — sh, awk, sed and C welded into a language whose motto was 'there's more than one way to do it'.

Influenced by AWK Bourne shell
Created by Larry Wall
Descendants Raku
Influenced PHP Ruby

Larry Wall's Perl (1987) — 'Practical Extraction and Report Language' — made regex a language primitive and text-munging an art: TIMTOWTDI, CPAN, and the 'Swiss Army chainsaw.'\n\nPerl 5 powered the 90s web; Perl 6 became Raku (2019), a separate language. Perl's cultural lesson — a language is a community — is its legacy.
