Stephen Bourne's sh (1979) — the Bourne shell — made shell scripting a language: variables, control flow, functions, and the here-doc. It shipped with Version 7 Unix and became the standard.\n\nEvery /bin/sh is its descendant; POSIX standardized it, and bash/ksh/zsh are its dialects.
