The pattern–action stream processor named for its authors — the Unix text pipeline's native tongue and the direct ancestor of Perl.

Aho, Weinberger, and Kernighan's AWK (1977) — the text-processing language named for its authors — made pattern-action the whole program: scan a stream, match, act, done.\n\nIt was the first widely-used 'little language,' the tool Perl later aimed to replace, and still the fastest way to process columnar text.
