Stroustrup's 'C with Classes' (1983) became C++ in 1985 — Simula's objects bolted onto C's systems power, zero-cost abstraction as the design creed. The 1998 ISO standard added templates, the STL, and metaprogramming by accident.\n\nIt is the largest, most complex mainstream language — the one game engines, browsers, and HPC are written in — and still argues about itself after 40 years.
