James Rand Jr.'s 1927 merger made Remington Rand the largest US office-machine company — typewriters, Kardex files, tabulators. Its 1950 purchase of EMCC for $250,000 plus royalty obligations gave it the first American commercial computer, the UNIVAC I.
Merged with Sperry Corporation in 1955 to form Sperry Rand, which ran UNIVAC as a division for three decades.
