NeXT Superseded
Jobs's exile company — beautiful black hardware that sold poorly and software that changed everything: NeXTSTEP became macOS, and AppKit fathered the iPhone's frameworks.
Jobs founded NeXT after losing the 1985 boardroom fight at Apple, taking five senior engineers with him. The NeXT Computer (1988) and NeXTstation (1990) were magnesium-cased art — Mach kernel, Display PostScript, Objective-C, Interface Builder — that sold maybe 50,000 units total.
But the software was a decade ahead: Berners-Lee built the web on a NeXT cube, id built Doom on NeXTSTEP. Apple bought NeXT for $429 million in 1997 for its OS; it became macOS, and Jobs became CEO again.
