NeXTSTEP (1989) married the Mach microkernel to BSD Unix, wrapped it in Display PostScript, and gave it Objective-C and Interface Builder — the most advanced development environment ever shipped. Berners-Lee built the web on it; id built Doom on it.\n\nOPENSTEP ran on x86, SPARC, and PA-RISC; Apple's 1997 acquisition made it the base of macOS and iOS — the only NeXT product that outlived the company.
