Created ML (1973) for the LCF prover — Hindley–Milner type inference, the algorithm that lets languages infer types without declarations.\n\nTuring Award 1991; also developed CCS and the pi-calculus for concurrency. His death in a 2010 car accident cut short the most influential theoretical career.
