CP/M-68k underneath, GEM on top — the ST's operating system that put a GUI in front of MIDI musicians for a decade.

Descended from CP/M
Ran on Atari ST
Created by Atari, Inc.

TOS (Tramiel Operating System) shipped with the 520ST in 1985 — GEMDOS kernel (a CP/M-68k derivative) plus Digital Research's GEM desktop, in 192K of ROM. It was fast, cheap, and shipped in every ST.\n\nMIDI was the killer feature: the built-in ports made the ST the studio standard. MultiTOS (1992) added multitasking; the line ended with the Falcon in 1993.
