The computer for the rest of us — the Alto/Star vision at consumer price, in a beige box with a handle. 128K was not enough, but the interface was everything.

Created by Apple Computer
Hosted macOS

The 1984 Super Bowl ad promised 1984 wouldn't be like 1984; the Mac (January 24) delivered the GUI for $2,495 — WYSIWYG, the Finder, MacWrite/MacPaint, in a handled beige box.

128K was fatally tight (the 'Fat Mac' 512K arrived within months) and sales were slow until PageMaker and the LaserWriter invented desktop publishing in 1985. The interface model it set has never changed.
