Ungar and Smith's Self (1987) — Sun/Stanford — removed classes from OOP entirely: prototype-based delegation, slots, and the adaptive JIT (the ancestor of V8's HotSpot techniques).\n\nJavaScript's prototype model descends from it directly; the JIT research it seeded made modern VMs possible.
