The Wilson government merged English Electric, Plessey, and ICT into ICL in 1968 to keep a British mainframe industry. The 2900 series ran VME and competed with IBM's 370 — the UK's own iron for two decades.
Fujitsu bought progressively in (1981, 1990, full ownership 1998) and retired the ICL name in 2002 — the last British mainframe maker absorbed.
