Tera Computer — founded 1987 by James Rottsolk to build multithreaded MTA supercomputers — bought Cray Research's remnants from SGI in 2000 and renamed itself Cray Inc. The X1, XT series, and modern Cray EX continue the name into the exascale era (Frontier).
Hewlett Packard Enterprise bought Cray Inc. for $1.3 billion in 2019 — the brand's third corporate death and second resurrection.
