IBM's System/360 chief architect left to build plug-compatible mainframes better than IBM's — and did. Amdahl's Law outlived the company; Fujitsu absorbed the rest.

Acquired by Fujitsu

Gene Amdahl — chief architect of the System/360 — quit IBM in 1970 and founded his own company with Fujitsu backing. The Amdahl 470V/6 (1975) was the first IBM plug-compatible mainframe, and faster; the company briefly took 8% of the mainframe market.

His name survives in Amdahl's Law (the speedup limit of parallel computing, from a 1967 paper). Fujitsu absorbed the company fully by 1997.
