Formalized automata and algorithm analysis — the textbooks and the theory behind every regex engine.

Co-wrote the automata-theory textbook ('Cinderella book') that taught generations, and invented half the algorithms with Tarjan.\n\nTuring Award 1986; Cornell's theory group is his building.
