Made Autocode usable on the Manchester Mark 1 (1954) — the first high-level language people actually programmed in.

Wrote Manchester Mark 1 Autocode (1954) — the first commercially used high-level language — and developed the 'compiler-compiler' (1960), an early parser generator.\n\nSucceeded Williams at Manchester and built the Atlas computer's software.
