Windows shrunk for handhelds — the kernel inside Pocket PC, Windows Mobile, and a decade of industrial terminals; faded with the smartphone it enabled.

Created by Microsoft

Windows CE (1996) was Microsoft's small-footprint OS for embedded — a clean-slate kernel (not NT) for PDAs, industrial terminals, and eventually the Pocket PC and Windows Mobile phone lines.\n\nCE 6.0 shared the name until Windows Embedded Compact 2013; the embedded market moved to Linux and it died in maintenance.
