The smartphone OS of the 2000s — half a billion Nokia handsets; killed by the iPhone's existence and a Microsoft partnership.

Symbian OS (1997) — the EPOC32 descendant from the Psion-Symbian JV (Nokia, Ericsson, Motorola, Psion) — ran the smartphone market from 2000 to 2010: 300 million devices, the best-selling smartphone OS ever at its peak.\n\nNokia bought it outright in 2008, open-sourced it as the Symbian Foundation (2009), then killed it for Windows Phone in 2011 — the largest OS write-off in history.
