The first OS written in a high-level language (ESPOL, an ALGOL dialect) — stack-machine guardians and tagged memory in 1961; still sold today as Unisys ClearPath MCP.

Burroughs MCP shipped with the B5000 in 1961 — the first OS written in a high-level language (ALGOL, when that was heresy), the first with virtual memory in production, and the first job-scheduling system on a stack machine.\n\nIts line is continuous: ClearPath MCP on Unisys hardware today is a direct descendant — arguably the oldest continuously-running operating-system lineage in existence.
