The kernel GNU kept meaning to finish — Mach-based servers-in-userspace; still developed, still the punchline that outlived its punchline status.

GNU Hurd — the FSF's own kernel, a Mach-based multi-server design — began 1990 and has been 'almost ready' since. Its translator concept (the filesystem as composable servers) remains architecturally elegant.\n\nDebian GNU/Hurd exists; it works; it's still waiting for its kernel moment while Linux took it.
