Dillon's FreeBSD fork for SMP done differently — HAMMER filesystem and a kernel architecture argument made flesh.

Matt Dillon forked FreeBSD 4.x in 2003 over the SMP direction — DragonFly BSD kept the 4.x threading model, built its own HAMMER filesystem, and pursued a clustered-SMP design FreeBSD had abandoned.\n\nStill developed; HAMMER2 is its current filesystem, and the project is the BSD world's 'road not taken.'
