CSIRAC Dead
Australia's first stored-program computer — and the oldest surviving first-generation machine in the world, intact at Museums Victoria in Melbourne.
Trevor Pearcey and Maston Beard built CSIR Mk 1 in Sydney — first program run November 1949, making Australia the fourth nation with a working stored-program machine. Renamed CSIRAC when it moved to Melbourne in 1955, it ran weather forecasts and engineering calculations until 1964.
Uniquely among first-generation machines, it survives intact — the oldest surviving first-generation electronic stored-program computer, preserved at Museums Victoria since 1980.
