The lambda-papers language — a deliberately tiny Lisp that taught the world continuations, hygienic macros, and lexical scope done right.

Steele and Sussman's Scheme (1975) — born of modeling actors in Lisp — kept only lambda: lexical scoping, first-class continuations, tail-call optimization, and deliberately minimal core.\n\nThe Lambda Papers documented it; R7RS is the current standard. Scheme remains the canonical 'small is powerful' language — proof a language can fit in a lecture.
