The first great JS alt-language — significant whitespace and arrow syntax that ES6 later absorbed; its job done, it rests.

Jeremy Ashkenas's CoffeeScript (2009) — 'It's just JavaScript' — cleaned JavaScript's syntax: significant whitespace, comprehensions, =>, and classes before ES6 had them.\n\nIt influenced ES6/ES2015 massively and then became redundant; its historical role is pushing the language forward.
