Urban Müller's Brainfuck (1993) — eight characters total — was designed as the smallest possible compiler (~100 bytes). It is the canonical esolang: Turing-complete with + - < > [ ] . ,\n\nIt spawned the entire esolang genre; writing a Brainfuck interpreter is a rite of passage.
