Founded 1946 by Stanford trustees, SRI is a contract research institute — Engelbart's Augmentation Research Center (1963–77) was its most famous tenant, producing NLS and the December 1968 demo.
It also ran the ARPANET's Network Information Center and second node, hosted early AI work (Shakey the robot, Dendral), and later produced Siri. Independent of Stanford since 1970.
