Larry Ellison, Bob Miner, and Ed Oates founded Software Development Laboratories in 1977 to implement Codd's 1970 relational paper — reading IBM's System R papers since IBM wouldn't ship it. Oracle V2 (1979, no V1) was the first commercial SQL database.
Decades of acquisitions followed: PeopleSoft, Siebel, BEA, Sun (2010), NetSuite, Cerner. Oracle is now primarily a database-and-cloud company, and Java's steward by default.
