Three Russian developers founded JetBrains in Prague in 2000 (originally IntelliJ Software). ReSharper and the IntelliJ IDEA Java IDE made its reputation on refactoring and code analysis.
Kotlin (2011) was born of frustration — a pragmatic Java replacement for their own million-line codebase — and became an official Android language in 2017. The company remains privately held and profitable, an unusual survivor of the tools business.
