Founded on Moore's eponymous law — memory first, then the 4004, the x86 dynasty, and the microprocessor business IBM's PC choice handed it.

Noyce and Moore left Fairchild in July 1968 to found NM Electronics, renamed Intel. It built its business on memory (DRAM, EPROM), produced the 4004 — the first commercial microprocessor, for a Busicom calculator — in 1971, then the 8008, 8080, and 8086.

IBM's 1981 PC chose the 8088 (the 8086's 8-bit-bus sibling) and Intel inherited the PC industry. 'Intel Inside' made a chip vendor a consumer brand; the foundry-vs-fabless era has been less kind.
