Turbo Pascal for $49.95 when compilers cost hundreds — Kahn's mail-order upstart defined the IDE for a decade. Sold to Micro Focus in 2009; the name is now owned by Idera.
Philippe Kahn shipped Turbo Pascal in November 1983 from a Scotts Valley garage — $49.95 mail order when compilers cost hundreds, with a built-in editor that invented the IDE. Turbo C, Prolog, and Delphi followed; Anders Hejlsberg wrote them all.
The Microsoft fight it couldn't win (Hejlsberg defected 1996) plus the dBASE acquisition it couldn't digest broke it. Micro Focus bought the dev-tools business in 2009; Idera owns the name and still ships Delphi.
