Amstrad Superseded
Alan Sugar's empire — the CPC range, the all-in-one PCW word processor, then Sinclair's computer line. Sold to BSkyB in 2007; Sugar is better known now for television.
Alan Sugar — Tottenham market trader — built Amstrad ('AMS Trading') on vertically integrated consumer electronics. The CPC464 (1984), PCW8256 all-in-one word processor (1985), and £300 PC1512 made computing affordable in Britain and much of Europe.
Amstrad bought Sinclair's computer business for £5 million in 1986 and built the Spectrum +2/+3. Later bets on set-top boxes paid off: BSkyB bought the company in 2007 for £125 million.
