# How to write a recipe

Click **Edit** on any page — or hit a red link to create a new one. No account needed.

## The recipe page shape

Every recipe follows the same layout so readers always know where to look:

1. **Infobox** — `infobox` with title, type, course, serves, prep_time, origin
2. **Opening line** — one sentence: what it is and why it matters
3. **Ingredients** — a plain `- ` list, measurements first
4. **Method** — a numbered `1. ` list, one action per step
5. **History** — where the dish comes from
6. **Folk & cultural notes** — the stories people tell about it
7. **Categories** — `` tags at the bottom

## Markup

| what | how |
| --- | --- |
| heading | `# Title`, `## Section`, `### Part` |
| bold / italic | `**bold**`, `*italic*` |
| list | `- item` or `1. item` |
| quote | `> words` |
| citation | `cite: source` — superscript + auto Footnotes list |
| callout | ```note`, `fact`, `tip`, `warn`, `quote` |
| internal link | `Page name` or `shown text` |
| category | `` anywhere in the text |
| external link | `[label](https://example.org)` |

## Kitchen customs

* **Red links** are recipes not yet written — click one to write it.
* Every page has a **History** tab; anyone can view or revert old revisions.
* Test the recipe before you publish it. If Grandma's card says "a pinch," measure the pinch.
* File every recipe in at least one dish-type category (Sandwiches, Soups, Mains, Desserts, Drinks) and one cuisine category where it applies.
