**Adriane Knoppix** — the **A**udio **D**esktop **R**eference **I**mplementation **A**nd **N**etworking **E**nvironment — is a text-based, menu-driven live system shipped inside the Knoppix distribution. Knoppix founder **Klaus Knopper** built it for his blind wife Adriane, and it carries her name: a completely non-visual computer bootable straight off a live CD or USB, on whatever hardware happened to be nearby.cite: unix.stackexchange — "Are there any up-to-date blind accessible Linux distros?"; Knoppix project history
The concept was quietly radical for its era. Instead of a desktop with accessibility added, Adriane offered a **menu-driven text environment** — email, browsing, text processing, multimedia — navigable entirely by ear and keyboard, booting speech-first from removable media. A blind user could turn almost any PC into their PC without installing anything.cite: Knoppix/Adriane documentation

# Legacy
Adriane established the pattern the whole accessibility-distro lineage follows: accessibility is a boot property, not a settings panel. It directly preceded — and philosophically seeded — later full distributions like Vinux, Sonar, Accessible-Coconut, and Slint. See The Hat Tips Both Ways for how this lineage informs the Fedora 45 console debates.
