establish a length limitation on certain
 vehicles being transported by          
heavy-duty tow and recovery vehicles1   
and for other purposes4  #a4 ,short     
title ,this ,act may be cited as the    
,towing ,safety ,act4  #b4 ,covered     
heavy-duty tow and recovery vehicles    
,section #abg7m77#b7 of title #bc1      
,united ,states ,code1 is amended-- 7#a7
 by amending subparagraph 7,a7 to read  
as follows3  7,a7 is responding to1     
returning from1 or transporting a       
wrecked or disabled vehicle from the    
place where the vehicle became wrecked  
or disabled to the nearest appropriate  
repair facility or other location1 as   
directed by any agency having           

jurisdiction2  2  7#b7 in subparagraph  
7,b7-- 7,a7 by striking gross vehicle   
weight and inserting combined gross     
vehicle weight rating2 and  7,b7 by     
striking the period at the end and      
inserting a semicolon2 and  7#c7 by     
adding at the end the following3  7,c7  
is traveling within a single ,state2 and
  7,d7 has axle weights and a           
configuration that can safely operate on
 highway bridges along the route of     
travel as determined by the             
transportation agency of jurisdiction4

,code1 is amended-- 7#a7 in subsection  
7a71 by adding at the end the following3
  7#h7 ,covered heavy-duty tow and      
recovery vehicle ,the term covered      
heavy-duty tow and recovery vehicle     
means any vehicle transporting a wrecked
 or disabled vehicle from the place     
where the vehicle became wrecked or     
disabled to the nearest appropriate     
repair facility or other location1 as   

directed by any agency having           
jurisdiction4  2 and  7#b7 in subsection
 7b77#a7-- 7,a7 in subparagraph 7,g71 by
 striking 2 or and inserting a          
semicolon2  7,b7 in subparagraph 7,h71  
by striking the period at the end and   
inserting a semicolon2 and  7,c7 by     
adding at the end the following3  7,i7  
imposes an overall length limit on any  
combination of vehicles1 or the length  
of any individual vehicle in the        
combination configuration1 being        
transported by a covered heavy-duty tow 
and recovery vehicle if the wrecked or  
disabled vehicle combination being      
transported was in compliance with      
applicable length limits at the time and
 place of the initial wreck or          
disablement2 or  7,j7 imposes a limit to
 the number of vehicles that may be     
transported in combination with a       
covered heavy-duty tow and recovery     
vehicle if the wrecked or disabled      
vehicle combination being transported   
was in compliance with applicable limits
