respect to include reducing injuries and
 deaths resulting from crashes in school
 zones as eligible programming under    
,state highway safety programs1 and for 
other purposes4  #a4 ,short title ,this 
,act may be cited as the ,protect ,our  
,students ,act4  #b4 ,findings ,congress
 finds the following3  7#a7 ,school zone
 safety issues are prevalent across our 
communities and warrant additional      
,federal funding and attention4  7#b7   
,each year1 approximately #ajj students 
are killed in traffic incidents walking 
to or from school and #be1jjj students  
are injured4  7#c7 ,no student should   
have to fear for their lives when       
walking to or from school4  #c4 ,highway

 safety programs ,section               
#djb7;a77#b77vi7 of title #bc1 ,united  
,states ,code1 is amended by inserting  
and traffic incidents in school zones   
after buses4  #d4 ,regulations ,the     
,secretary of ,transportation shall     
issue such regulations as are necessary 
to clarify that highway safety program  
uses for school zone safety improvements
 under section #djb7b77vi7 of title #bc1
 ,united ,states ,code1 may include--   
7#a7 crossing guards2  7#b7 flashing    
lights and beacons2  7#c7 visible       
signage and markings2  7#d7 crosswalks2 
7#e7 traffic calming measures1 including
 pedestrian islands2  7#f7 traffic      
lights2  7#g7 school zones audits and   
assessments2  7#h7 automated traffic    
enforcement2 and  7#i7 ,safe ,routes to 
,school non-infrastructure4  #e4        
,allocation ,section #djb7;b77#a77;,c7  
of title #bc1 ,united ,states ,code1 is 
amended by striking #dj percent and     
inserting #ej percent4
