bill2 which was read twice and referred 
to the ,committee on ,homeland ,security
 and ,governmental ,affairs  ,a ,,bill  
,to require the ,director of the ,office
 of ,personnel ,management to create a  
classification that more accurately     
reflects the vital role of wildland     
firefighters4  #a4 ,short title ,this   
,act may be cited as the ,wildland      
,firefighter ,recognition ,act4  #b4    
,definitions ,in this ,act-- 7#a7 the   
term ,director means the ,director of   
the ,office of ,personnel ,management2  
7#b7 the term employee has the meaning  
given the term in section #baje of title
 #e1 ,united ,states ,code2  7#c7 the   
term ,federal land management agency    
means-- 7,a7 within the ,department of  
the ,interior-- 7i7 the ,bureau of ,land
 ,management2  7ii7 the ,bureau of      

,indian ,affairs2  7iii7 the ,national  
,park ,service2 and  7iv7 the ,united   
,states ,fish and ,wildlife ,service2   
and  7,b7 within the ,department of     
,agriculture1 the ,forest ,service2     
7#d7 the term wildland fire-- 7,a7 means
 any non-structure fire that occurs in  
vegetation or natural fuels2 and  7,b7  
includes prescribed fire and wildfire2  
and  7#e7 the term wildland firefighter 
means-- 7,a7 an employee of a ,federal  
land management agency1 the duties of   
whose position are primarily to perform 
work directly related to the prevention1
 control1 suppression1 or management of 
wildland fires1 including an employee of
 a ,federal land management agency who  
is assigned to support wildland fire    
activities2 and  7,b7 an employee of a  
,federal land management agency who is  
transferred to a supervisory or         
administrative position from a position 
described in subparagraph 7,a74  #c4    
,classification of wildland firefighters
  7a7 ,requirements  7#a7 ,in general   

,not later than #cj days after the date 
of enactment of this ,act1 the          
,director1 in cooperation with the      
,federal land management agencies1 shall
 commence development of a distinct     
wildland firefighter occupational series
 that more accurately reflects the      
variety of duties performed by wildland 
firefighters4  7#b7 ,designation ,the   
official title assigned to any          
occupational series established under   
paragraph 7#a7 shall include the        
designation of ,wildland ,firefighter4  
7#c7 ,positions described ,paragraph    
7#a7 shall apply with respect to any    
class or other category of positions    
that consists primarily or exclusively  
of forestry technician positions1 range 
technician positions1 or any other      
positions the duties and                
responsibilities of which include-- 7,a7
 significant prevention1 preparedness1  
control1 suppression1 or management     
activities for wildland fires2 or  7,b7 
activities necessary to meet any other  

emergency incident to which assigned4   
7#d7 ,consultation ,it is the sense of  
,congress that the ,director should     
consult with employee associations and  
any other groups that represent wildland
 firefighters in carrying out this      
subsection4  7#e7 ,implementation ,not  
later than #b years after the date of   
enactment of this ,act-- 7,a7 the       
,director shall complete the development
 of the wildland firefighter            
occupational series required under      
paragraph 7#a72 and  7,b7 the ,secretary
 of the ,interior and the ,secretary of 
,agriculture shall use the wildland     
firefighter occupational series         
developed under paragraph 7#a7 in the   
advertising and hiring of a wildland    
firefighter4  7b7 ,hazardous duty       
differential not affected ,section      
#eede7;d77#a7 of title #e1 ,united      
,states ,code1 is amended by striking   
except and all that follows and         
inserting the following3 except-- 7,a7  
an employee in an occupational series   

covering positions for which the primary
 duties involve the prevention1 control1
 suppression1 or management of wildland 
fires1 as determined by the ,office2 and
  7,b7 in such other circumstances as   
the ,office may by regulation prescribe2
 and  4  7c7 ,current employees ,any    
individual employed as a wildland       
firefighter on the date on which the    
occupational series established under   
subsection 7a7 takes effect may elect   
to-- 7#a7 remain in the occupational    
series in which the individual is       
working2 or  7#b7 be included in the    
wildland firefighter occupational series
 established under subsection 7a74
