continuation of service provision for   
members of the ,merit ,systems          
,protection ,board4  #a4 ,merit ,systems
 ,protection ,board continuation of     
service ,section #abjb of title #e1     
,united ,states ,code1 is amended to    
read as follows3  #abjb4 ,term of       
office2 filling vacancies2 removal  7a7 
,term ,the term of office of each member
 of the ,merit ,systems ,protection     
,board is #g years4  7b7 ,in-,term      
vacancies  7#a7 ,term of appointment ,a 
member appointed to fill a vacancy      
occurring before the end of a term of   
office of the member's predecessor may  

serve for the remainder of that term4   
7#b7 ,appointment requirements ,any     
appointment to fill a vacancy is subject
 to the requirements of section #abja4  
7#c7 ,continuation of service ,any      
member serving only a portion of a      
#g-year term in office may continue to  
serve until a successor is appointed and
 has qualified1 except that--  7,a7 such
 member may not continue to serve for   
more than #a year after the date on     
which the term of the member would      
otherwise expire under this section1    
unless reappointed under section #abja2 
or  7,b7 if such member is the sole     
member appointed to the ,board under    
section #abja on the date on which the  
term of the member would expire under   
subparagraph 7,a71 unless such member is
 reappointed under section #abja1 such  
member may not continue to serve on and 
after the earlier of--  7i7 the date on 
which a member 7including a successor7  
is appointed and has qualified2 or  7ii7
 the date that is #b years after the    

date on which the term of the member    
would otherwise expire under this       
section4  7c7 ,continuation of service  
as member for full-,term appointments   
,any member appointed for a #g-year     
term-- 7#a7 may not be reappointed to   
any following term2 and  7#b7 may       
continue to serve beyond the expiration 
of the term until a successor is        
appointed and has qualified1 except     
that--  7,a7 such member may not        
continue to serve for more than #a year 
after the date on which the term of the 
member would otherwise expire under this
 section2 or  7,b7 if such member is the
 sole member appointed to the ,board    
under section #abja on the date on which
 the term of the member would expire    
under subparagraph 7,a71 such member may
 not continue to serve on and after the
