prohibit sex discrimination in federally funded education programs and activities4 7#b7 ,although title ,,ix requires that schools treat students equally with regard to athletic participation opportunities1 athletic scholarships1 and the benefits and services provided to athletic teams1 female participation rates1 especially for girls of color1 lag far behind male participation rates4 ,currently1 only #b_/c of ,black and ,latina girls play sports1 and barely over #a_/b of ,asian-,american girls play sports1 compared to more than #c_/d of ,white girls4 ,female student athletes have been found to have higher levels of self-esteem and to be more likely to graduate from high school than female students who do not play sports4 ,although the availability of athletic scholarships facilitates access to higher education1 many schools fail to award proportional athletic financial aid to women1 which can affect their long-term employment outcomes and economic security4 7#c7 ,although title ,,ix ensures gender equity in career and technical education1 women are severely underrepresented in fields nontraditional to their gender4 ,a recent study by the ,national ,coalition for ,women and ,girls in ,education indicated that women make up more than #hj percent of workers with training or certification in historically women-dominated occupations that pay less than #cj1jjj per year1 including child care1 early childhood education1 home care1 and cosmetology4 ,women represent less than #dj percent of workers trained or certified in high-paying and historically same year4 ,furthermore1 in ,,stem fields where women are particularly underrepresented1 such as computing and engineering1 women earned an even smaller percentage of degrees1 including only #ai percent of computing bachelor's degrees1 and #ba percent of engineering bachelor's degrees4 7#e7 ,although title ,,ix prohibits sex discrimination in employment in federally funded education programs1 a recent report by the ,american ,association of ,university ,women found that women comprise only #cf percent of tenured faculty and #cj percent of university presidents4 ,a similar study by the ,national ,science ,foundation confirmed that women only hold #cd percent of all tenured and tenure-track positions1 and #bg percent of full professor positions in ,,stem fields4 ,furthermore1 ,black and ,latina women1 together1 hold only #d percent of all tenured and tenure-track positions1 and barely over #b percent of full professor positions in ,,stem fields4 ,asian-,american women hold around #e percent of all tenured and tenure-track positions1 and less than #c percent of full professor positions in ,,stem fields4 7#f7 ,although title ,,ix protects against sexual and sex-based harassment and violence1 more than #ej percent of girls and #dj percent of boys in grades #g through #ab experience sexual harassment each year1 and approximately #aj percent of high school students experience dating violence each year4 ,a recent ,,glsen report indicated that #hg percent of lesbian1 gay1 bisexual1 transgender1 queer1 and questioning 7referred to in this section as ,,lgbtq7 students have experienced harassment or assault based on a personal characteristic1 and nearly #ff percent have experienced ,,lgbtq-related verbal harassment at school based on sexual orientation4 ,research has shown that ,,lgbtq students who experience harassment at school are more likely to experience depression and anxiety1 to engage in unhealthy and antisocial behaviors1 and to have more unexcused absences from school4 7#g7 ,although title ,,ix prohibits discrimination on the basis of pregnancy or parenting status1 the limited availability of accommodations for pregnancy-related conditions1 including medical absences1 and the limited access to school-related activities for pregnant and parenting students1 are the leading reasons that parenting mothers drop out of high school4 ,a recent report by the ,national ,women's ,law ,center indicated that only #a_/b of teenage mothers earn a high school diploma by the age of #bb1 compared with #hi percent of women who do not have a child during their teenage years1 and that #a_/c of young mothers will never get a diploma or ,,ged1 further limiting continuing opportunities for education and employment4 7#h7 ,although title ,,ix protects against discrimination based on stereotypes of actual or perceived sex 7including sexual orientation or gender identity71 many people carry implicit or unconscious biases that can unintentionally influence attitudes1 beliefs1 behaviors1 and decisionmaking processes4 ,research has shown that unconscious biases can impact classroom environments1 teaching methods1 student evaluations1 disciplinary practices1 and career and counseling guidance1 particularly for students who are pursuing nontraditional fields4 #c4 ,definitions ,in this ,act3 7#a7 ,,esea definitions ,the
