,advisory ,committee for ,aeronautics 7referred to in this section as ,,naca7 hired #e women to serve as the first computer pool at the ,langley ,memorial ,aeronautical ,laboratory where those women took on work making calculations that male engineers had made previously4 7#b7 ,during the #aidjs1 ,,naca began recruiting ,african ,american women to work as computers and initially separated those women from their ,white counterparts in a group known as the ,west ,area ,computers where the women were restricted to segregated dining and bathroom facilities4 7#c7 ,katherine ,johnson was born on ,august #bf1 #aiah1 in ,white ,sulphur ,springs1 ,west ,virginia4 7#d7 ,in #aiec1 ,katherine ,johnson began her career in aeronautics as a computer in the segregated ,west ,area ,computing unit described in paragraph 7#b74 7#e7 ,as a member of the ,flight ,research ,division1 ,katherine ,johnson analyzed data from flight tests4 ,after ,,naca was reformulated into the ,national ,aeronautics and ,space ,administration 7referred to in this section as ,,nasa71 ,johnson-- 7,a7 calculated the trajectory for ,alan ,shepard's ,freedom #g mission in #aifa1 which was the first human spaceflight by an individual from the ,united ,states2 7,b7 coauthored a report that provided the equations for describing orbital spaceflight with a specified landing point1 which made her the first woman to be recognized as an author of a report from the ,flight ,research ,division2 7,c7 was asked to verify the calculations when electronic computers at ,,nasa were used to calculate the orbit for ,john ,glenn's ,friendship #g mission2 and 7,d7 provided calculations for ,,nasa throughout her career1 including for the ,apollo missions4 7#f7 ,katherine ,johnson retired from ,,nasa in #aihf4 7#g7 ,dr4 ,christine ,darden was born on ,september #aj1 #aidb1 in ,monroe1 ,north ,carolina4 7#h7 ,in #aifb1 ,dr4 ,christine ,darden graduated from ,hampton ,institute with a ,b4,s4 in ,mathematics and a teaching credential4 7#i7 ,dr4 ,christine ,darden attended ,virginia ,state ,university where she studied aerosol physics and earned an ,m4,s4 in ,applied ,mathematics4 7#aj7 ,dr4 ,christine ,darden began her career in aeronautics in #aifg as a data analyst at ,,nasa's ,langley ,research ,center 7referred to in this section as ,langley7 before being promoted to aerospace engineer in #aigc4 ,her work in this position resulted in the production of low-boom sonic effects1 which revolutionized aerodynamics design4 7#aa7 ,dr4 ,christine ,darden completed her education by earning a ,ph4,d4 in ,mechanical ,engineering from ,george ,washington ,university in #aihc4 7#ab7 ,while working at ,,nasa1 ,dr4 ,christine ,darden-- 7,a7 was appointed to be the leader of the ,sonic ,boom ,team1 which worked on designs to minimize the effects of sonic booms by testing wing and nose designs for supersonic aircraft2 7,b7 wrote more than #ej articles on aeronautics design2 and 7,c7 became the first ,african ,american to be promoted to a position in the ,senior ,executive ,service at ,langley4 7#ac7 ,dorothy ,vaughan was born on ,september #bj1 #aiaj1 in ,kansas ,city1 ,missouri4 7#ad7 ,dorothy becoming ,,naca's first ,african ,american supervisor1 a position that she held for #i years2 and 7,c7 became an expert programmer in ,,fortran as a member of ,,nasa's ,analysis and ,computation ,division4 7#ae7 ,dorothy ,vaughan retired from ,,nasa in #aiga and died on ,november #aj1 #bjjh4 7#af7 ,mary ,jackson was born on ,april #i1 #aiba1 in ,hampton1 ,virginia4 7#ag7 ,mary ,jackson started her career at ,,naca in #aiea1 working as a computer as a member of the ,west ,area ,computing unit4 7#ah7 ,after petitioning the ,city of ,hampton to allow her to take graduate-level courses in math and physics at night at the all-,white ,hampton ,high ,school1 ,mary ,jackson was able to complete the required training to become an engineer1 making her ,,nasa's first female ,african ,american engineer4 7#ai7 ,mary ,jackson-- 7,a7 while at ,,naca and ,,nasa-- 7i7 worked in the ,theoretical ,aerodynamics ,branch of the ,subsonic-,transonic ,aerodynamics ,division at ,langley where she analyzed wind tunnel and aircraft flight data2 and 7ii7 published a dozen technical papers that focused on the boundary layer of air around airplanes2 and 7,b7 after #ba years working as an engineer at ,,nasa1 transitioned to a new job as ,langley's ,federal ,women's ,program ,manager where she worked to improve the prospects of ,,nasa's female mathematicians1 engineers1 and scientists4 7#bj7 ,mary ,jackson retired from ,,nasa in #aihe and died in #bjje4 7#ba7 ,these #d women1 along with the other ,african ,american women in ,,nasa's ,west ,area ,computing unit1 were integral to the success of the early space program4 ,the stories of these #d women exemplify the experiences of hundreds of women who worked as computers1 mathematicians1 and engineers at ,,naca beginning in the #aicjs and their handmade calculations played an integral role in-- 7,a7 aircraft testing during ,world ,war ,,ii2 7,b7 supersonic flight research2 7,c7 sending the ,voyager probes to explore the
