to the ,committee on ,energy and        
,natural ,resources  ,a ,,bill  ,to     
require the ,secretary of the ,interior 
to conduct certain special resource     
studies4  #a4 ,short title ,this ,act   
may be cited as the ,pacific ,islands   
,parks ,act of #bjac4  #b4 ,definition  
of ,secretary ,in this ,act1 the term   
,secretary means the ,secretary of the  
,interior4  #c4 ,special resource       
studies  7a7 ,study  7#a7 ,in general   
,the ,secretary shall conduct a special 
resource study of each of the following 
sites3  7,a7 ,the ,ka#8u ,coast on the  
island of ,hawaii1 ,hawaii4  7,b7 ,the  
northern coast of ,maui1 ,hawaii4  7,c7 
,the southeastern coast of ,kauai1      
,hawaii4  7,d7 ,historic sites on       
,midway ,atoll4  7,e7 ,on request of the
 ,governor of the ,commonwealth of the  

,northern ,mariana ,islands1 the island 
of ,rota in the ,commonwealth of the    
,northern ,mariana ,islands4  7#b7      
,contents ,in conducting each study     
required under paragraph 7#a71 the      
,secretary shall--  7,a7 evaluate the   
national significance of the site and   
the area surrounding the site2  7,b7    
determine the suitability and           
feasibility of designating the site as a
 unit of the ,national ,park ,system2   
7,c7 consider other alternatives for    
preservation1 protection1 and           
interpretation of the site by ,federal1 
,state1 or local governmental entities  
or private and nonprofit organizations2 
7,d7 consult with any interested        
,federal1 ,state1 or local governmental 
entities1 private and nonprofit         
organizations1 or individuals2 and  7,e7
 identify cost estimates for any        
,federal acquisition1 development1      
interpretation1 operation1 and          
maintenance associated with the         
alternatives considered under the study4

  7b7 ,updates  7#a7 ,in general ,the   
,secretary shall update the study       
authorized by section #cbf7;b77#c77,n7  
of the ,national ,park ,service ,studies
 ,act of #aiii 7as enacted in title     
,,iii of ,appendix ,c of ,public ,law   
#ajf-aac2 #aac ,stat4 #aeja;,a-#aie7    
relating to ,world ,war ,,ii sites in   
the ,republic of ,palau4  7#b7 ,contents
 ,in updating the study described in    
paragraph 7#a71 the ,secretary shall--  
7,a7 determine whether conditions have  
changed to justify designating the site 
as a unit of the ,national ,park        
,system2  7,b7 consider other           
alternatives for preservation1          
protection1 and interpretation of the   
site by ,federal1 ,state1 or local      
governmental entities or private and    
nonprofit organizations2  7,c7 consult  
with any interested ,federal1 ,state1 or
 local governmental entities1 private   
and nonprofit organizations1 or         
individuals2 and  7,d7 identify cost    
estimates for any ,federal acquisition1 

development1 interpretation1 operation1 
and maintenance associated with the     
alternatives considered under the study4
  7c7 ,applicable law ,the studies and  
updates to the study required under this
 section shall be conducted in          
accordance with section #h of the       
,national ,park ,system ,general        
,authorities ,act 7#af ,u4,s4,c4        
#a;a-#e74  7d7 ,report ,not later than  
#c years after the date on which funds  
are first made available for the studies
 and updates to the study under this    
,act1 the ,secretary shall submit to the
 ,committee on ,natural ,resources of   
the ,house of ,representatives and the  
,committee on ,energy and ,natural      
,resources of the ,senate a report that 
describes--  7#a7 the results of each   
study and updates to the study2 and     
7#b7 any conclusions and recommendations
 of the ,secretary based on the results 
described in paragraph 7#a74  #d4       
,authorization of appropriations ,there 
are authorized to be appropriated to    

carry out this ,act such sums as are    
necessary4
