,weymouth ,new ,testament in ,modern ,speech1 ,hebrews ,third ,edition #aiac ,r4 ,f4 ,weymouth ,book #eh ,hebrews #jja3jja ,god1 who in ancient days spoke to our forefathers in many distinct messages and by various methods through the ,prophets1 #jja3jjb has at the end of these days spoken to us through a ,son1 who is the pre-destined ,lord of the universe1 and through whom ,he made the ,ages4 #jja3jjc ,he brightly reflects ,god's glory and is the exact representation of ,his being1 and upholds the universe by ,his all-powerful word4 ,after securing man's purification from sin ,he took ,his seat at the right hand of the ,majesty on high1 #jja3jjd having become as far superior to the angels as the ,name ,he possesses by inheritance is more excellent than theirs4 #jja3jje ,for to which of the angels did ,god ever say1 ,my ,son art ,thou3 ,i have this day become ,thy ,father2 and again1 ,i will be a ,father to ,him1 and ,he shall be ,my ,son8 #jja3jjf ,but speaking of the time when ,he once more brings ,his ,firstborn into the world1 ,he says1 ,and let all ,god's angels worship ,him4 #jja3jjg ,moreover of the angels ,he says1 ,he changes ,his angels into winds1 and ,his ministering servants into a flame of fire4 #jja3jjh ,but of ,his ,son1 ,he says1 ,thy throne1 ,o ,god1 is for ever and for ever1 and the sceptre of ,thy ,kingdom is a sceptre of absolute justice4 #jja3jji ,thou hast loved righteousness and hated lawlessness2 therefore ,god1 ,thy ,god1 has anointed ,thee with the oil of gladness beyond ,thy companions4 #jja3jaj ,it is also of ,his ,son that ,god says1 ,thou1 ,o ,lord1 in the beginning didst lay the foundations of the earth1 and the heavens are the work of ,thy hands4 #jja3jaa ,the heavens will perish1 but ,thou remainest2 and they will all grow old like a garment1 #jja3jab and1 as though they were a mantle ,thou wilt roll them up2 yes1 like a garment1 and they will undergo change4 ,but ,thou art the same1 and ,thy years will never come to an end4 #jja3jac ,to which of the angels has ,he ever said1 ,sit at ,my right hand till ,i make ,thy foes a footstool for ,thy feet8 #jja3jad ,are not all angels spirits that serve ,him--whom ,he sends out to render service for the benefit of those who1 before long1 will inherit salvation8 #jjb3jja ,for this reason we ought to pay the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard1 for fear we should drift away from them4 #jjb3jjb ,for if the message delivered through angels proved to be true1 and every transgression and act of disobedience met with just retribution1 #jjb3jjc how shall 99we99 escape if we are indifferent to a salvation as great as that now offered to us8 ,this1 after having first of all been announced by the ,lord ,himself1 had its truth made sure to us by those who heard ,him1 #jjb3jjd while ,god corroborated their testimony by signs and marvels and various miracles1 and by gifts of the ,holy ,spirit distributed in accordance with ,his own will4 #jjb3jje ,it is not to angels that ,god has assigned the sovereignty of that coming world1 of which we speak4 #jjb3jjf ,but1 as we know1 a writer has solemnly said1 ,how poor a creature is man1 and yet ,thou dost remember him1 and a son of man1 and yet ,thou dost come to him6 #jjb3jjg ,thou hast made him only a little inferior to the angels2 with glory and honour ,thou hast crowned him1 and hast set him to govern the works of ,thy hands4 #jjb3jjh ,thou hast put everything in subjection under his feet4 ,for this subjecting of the universe to man implies the leaving nothing not subject to him4 ,but we do not as yet see the universe subject to him4 #jjb3jji ,but ,jesus--who was made a little inferior to the angels in order that through ,god's grace ,he might taste death for every human being--we already see wearing a crown of glory and honour because of ,his having suffered death4 #jjb3jaj ,for it was fitting that ,he for whom1 and through whom1 all things exist1 after ,he had brought many sons to glory1 should perfect by suffering the ,prince ,leader who had saved them4 #jjb3jaa ,for both ,he who sanctifies and those whom ,he is sanctifying have all one ,father2 and for this reason ,he is not ashamed to speak of them as ,his brothers2 #jjb3jab as when ,he says3 ,i will proclaim ,thy name to ,my brothers3 in the midst of the congregation ,i will hymn ,thy praises2 #jjb3jac and again1 ,as for ,me1 ,i will be one whose trust reposes in ,god2 and again1 ,here am ,i1 and here are the children ,god has given ,me4 #jjb3jad ,since then the children referred to are all alike sharers in perishable human nature1 ,he ,himself also1 in the same way1 took on ,him a share of it1 in order that through death ,he might render powerless him who had authority over death1 that is1 the ,devil1 #jjb3jae and might set at liberty all those who through fear of death had been subject to lifelong slavery4 #jjb3jaf ,for assuredly it is not to angels that ,he is continually reaching a helping hand1 but it is to the descendants of ,abraham4 #jjb3jag ,and for this purpose it was necessary that in all respects ,he should be made to resemble ,his brothers1 so that ,he might become a compassionate and faithful ,high ,priest in things relating to ,god1 in order to atone for the sins of the people4 #jjb3jah ,for inasmuch as ,he has ,himself felt the pain of temptation and trial1 ,he is also able instantly to help those who are tempted and tried4 #jjc3jja ,therefore1 holy brethren1 sharers with others in a heavenly invitation1 fix your thoughts on ,jesus1 the ,apostle and ,high ,priest whose followers we profess to be4 #jjc3jjb ,how faithful ,he was to ,him who appointed ,him1 just as ,moses also was faithful in all ,god's house6 #jjc3jjc ,for ,jesus has been counted worthy of greater glory than ,moses1 in so far as he who has built a house has higher honour than the house itself4 #jjc3jjd ,for every house has had a builder1 and the builder of all things is ,god4 #jjc3jje ,moreover1 ,moses was faithful in all ,god's house as a servant in delivering the message given him to speak2 #jjc3jjf but ,christ was faithful as a ,son having authority over ,god's house1 and we are that house1 if we hold firm to the ,end the boldness and the hope which we boast of as ours4 #jjc3jjg ,for this reason--as the ,holy ,spirit warns us1 ,to-day1 if you hear ,his voice1 #jjc3jjh do not harden your hearts as your forefathers did in the time of the provocation on the day of the temptation in the ,desert1 #jjc3jji where your forefathers so sorely tried ,my patience and saw all that ,i did during forty years4 #jjc3jaj ,therefore ,i was greatly grieved with that generation1 and ,i said1 ,they are ever going astray in heart1 and have not learnt to know ,my paths4' #jjc3jaa ,as ,i swore in ,my anger1 they shall not be admitted to ,my rest-- #jjc3jab see to it1 brethren1 that there is never in any one of you-- as perhaps there may be--a sinful and unbelieving heart1 manifesting itself in revolt from the ever-living ,god4 #jjc3jac ,on the contrary encourage one another1 day after day1 so long as ,to-day lasts1 so that not one of you may be hardened through the deceitful character of sin4 #jjc3jad ,for we have1 all alike1 become sharers with ,christ1 if we really hold our first confidence firm to the ,end2 #jjc3jae seeing that the warning still comes to us1 ,to-day1 if you hear ,his voice1 do not harden your hearts as your forefathers did in the time of the provocation4 #jjc3jaf ,for who were they that heard1 and yet provoked ,god8 ,was it not the whole of the people who had come out of ,egypt under the leadership of ,moses8 #jjc3jag ,and with whom was ,god so greatly grieved for forty years8 ,was it not with those who had sinned1 and whose dead bodies fell in the ,desert8 #jjc3jah ,and to whom did ,he swear that they should not be admitted to ,his rest1 if it was not to those who were disobedient8 #jjc3jai ,and so we see that it was owing to lack of faith that they could not be admitted4 #jjd3jja ,therefore let us be on our guard lest perhaps1 while ,he still leaves us a promise of being admitted to ,his rest1 some one of you should be found to have fallen short of it4 #jjd3jjb ,for ,good ,news has been brought to us as truly as to them2 but the message they heard failed to benefit them1 because they were not one in faith with those who gave heed to it4 #jjd3jjc ,we who have believed are soon to be admitted to the true rest2 as ,he has said1 ,as ,i swore in ,my anger1 they shall not be admitted to ,my rest1 although ,god's works had been going on ever since the creation of the world4 #jjd3jjd ,for1 as we know1 when speaking of the seventh day ,he has used the words1 ,and ,god rested on the seventh day from all ,his works2 #jjd3jje and ,he has also declared1 ,they shall not be admitted to ,my rest4 #jjd3jjf ,since1 then1 it is still true that some will be admitted to that rest1 and that because of disobedience those who formerly had ,good ,news proclaimed to them were not admitted1 #jjd3jjg ,he again definitely mentions a certain day1 ,to-day1 saying long afterwards1 by ,david's lips1 in the words already quoted1 ,to-day1 if you hear ,his voice1 do not harden your hearts4 #jjd3jjh ,for if ,joshua had given them the true rest1 we should not afterwards hear ,god speaking of another still future day4 #jjd3jji ,it follows that there still remains a sabbath rest for the people of ,god4 #jjd3jaj ,for ,he who has been admitted to ,his rest1 has rested from ,his works as ,god did from ,his4 #jjd3jaa ,let it then be our earnest endeavour to be admitted to that rest1 so that no one may perish through following the same example of unbelief4 #jjd3jab ,for ,god's ,message is full of life and power1 and is keener than the sharpest two-edged sword4 ,it pierces even to the severance of soul from spirit1 and penetrates between the joints and the marrow1 and it can discern the secret thoughts and purposes of the heart4 #jjd3jac ,and no created thing is able to escape its scrutiny2 but everything lies bare and completely exposed before the eyes of ,him with whom we have to do4 #jjd3jad ,inasmuch1 then1 as we have in ,jesus1 the ,son of ,god1 a great ,high ,priest who has passed into ,heaven itself1 let us hold firmly to our profession of faith4 #jjd3jae ,for we have not a ,high ,priest who is unable to feel for us in our weaknesses1 but one who was tempted in every respect just as we are tempted1 and yet did not sin4 #jjd3jaf ,therefore let us come boldly to the throne of grace1 that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our times of need4 #jje3jja ,for every ,high ,priest is chosen from among men1 and is appointed to act on behalf of men in matters relating to ,god1 in order to offer both gifts and sin-offerings1 #jje3jjb and must be one who is able to bear patiently with the ignorant and erring1 because he himself also is beset with infirmity4 #jje3jjc ,and for this reason he is required to offer sin-offerings not only for the people but also for himself4 #jje3jjd ,and no one takes this honourable office upon himself1 but only accepts it when called to it by ,god1 as ,aaron was4 #jje3jje ,so ,christ also did not claim for ,himself the honour of being made ,high ,priest1 but was appointed to it by ,him who said to ,him1 ,my ,son art ,thou3 ,i have to-day become ,thy ,father2 #jje3jjf as also in another passage ,he says1 ,thou art a priest for ever1 belonging to the order of ,melchizedek4 #jje3jjg ,for ,jesus during his earthly life offered up prayers and entreaties1 crying aloud and weeping as ,he pleaded with ,him who was able to bring ,him in safety out of death1 and ,he was delivered from the terror from which ,he shrank4 #jje3jjh ,although ,he was ,god's ,son1 yet ,he learned obedience from the sufferings which ,he endured2 #jje3jji and so1 having been made perfect1 ,he became to all who obey ,him the source and giver of eternal salvation4 #jje3jaj ,for ,god ,himself addresses ,him as a ,high ,priest for ever1 belonging to the order of ,melchizedek4 #jje3jaa ,concerning ,him we have much to say1 and much that it would be difficult to make clear to you1 since you have become so dull of apprehension4 #jje3jab ,for although1 considering the long time you have been believers1 you ought now to be teachers of others1 you really need some one to teach you over again the very rudiments of the truths of ,god1 and you have come to require milk instead of solid food4 #jje3jac ,by people who live on milk ,i mean those who are imperfectly acquainted with the teaching concerning righteousness4 #jje3jad ,such persons are mere babes4 ,but solid food is for adults-- that is1 for those who through constant practice have their spiritual faculties carefully trained to distinguish good from evil4 #jjf3jja ,therefore leaving elementary instruction about the ,christ1 let us advance to mature manhood and not be continually re-laying a foundation of repentance from lifeless works and of faith in ,god1 #jjf3jjb or of teaching about ceremonial washings1 the laying on of hands1 the resurrection of the dead1 and the last judgement4 #jjf3jjc ,and advance we will1 if ,god permits us to do so4 #jjf3jjd ,for it is impossible1 in the case of those who have once for all been enlightened1 and have tasted the sweetness of the heavenly gift1 and have been made partakers of the ,holy ,spirit1 #jjf3jje and have realized how good the word of ,god is and how mighty are the powers of the coming ,age1 and then fell away-- #jjf3jjf it is impossible1 ,i say1 to keep bringing them back to a new repentance1 for1 to their own undoing1 they are repeatedly crucifying the ,son of ,god afresh and exposing ,him to open shame4 #jjf3jjg ,for land which has drunk in the rain that often falls upon it1 and brings forth vegetation useful to those for whose sakes1 indeed1 it is tilled1 has a share in ,god's blessing4 #jjf3jjh ,but if it only yields a mass of thorns and briers1 it is considered worthless1 and is in danger of being cursed1 and in the end will be destroyed by fire4 #jjf3jji ,but we1 even while we speak in this tone1 have a happier conviction concerning you1 my dearly-loved friends-- a conviction of things which point towards salvation4 #jjf3jaj ,for ,god is not unjust so that ,he is unmindful of your labour and of the love which you have manifested towards ,himself in having rendered services to ,his people and in still rendering them4 #jjf3jaa ,but we long for each of you to continue to manifest the same earnestness1 with a view to your enjoying fulness of hope to the very ,end2 #jjf3jab so that you may not become half-hearted1 but be imitators of those who through faith and patient endurance are now heirs to the promises4 #jjf3jac ,for when ,god gave the promise to ,abraham1 since ,he had no one greater to swear by1 ,he swore by ,himself1 #jjf3jad saying1 ,assuredly ,i will bless you and bless you1 ,i will increase you and increase you4 #jjf3jae ,and so1 as the result of patient waiting1 our forefather obtained what ,god had promised4 #jjf3jaf ,for men swear by what is greater than themselves2 and with them an oath in confirmation of a statement always puts an end to a dispute4 #jjf3jag ,in the same way1 since it was ,god's desire to display more convincingly to the heirs of the promise how unchangeable ,his purpose was1 #jjf3jah ,he added an oath1 in order that1 through two unchangeable things1 in which it is impossible for ,him to prove false1 we may possess mighty encouragement--we who1 for safety1 have hastened to lay hold of the hope set before us4 #jjf3jai ,that hope we have as an anchor of the soul--an anchor that can neither break nor drag4 ,it passes in behind the veil1 #jjf3jbj where ,jesus has entered as a forerunner on our behalf1 having become1 like ,melchizedek1 a ,high ,priest for ever4 #jjg3jja ,for this man1 ,melchizedek1 ,king of ,salem and priest of the ,most ,high ,god--he who when ,abraham was returning after defeating the kings met him and pronounced a blessing on him-- #jjg3jjb to whom also ,abraham presented a tenth part of all-- being first1 as his name signifies1 ,king of righteousness1 and secondly ,king of ,salem1 that is1 ,king of peace3 #jjg3jjc with no father or mother1 and no record of ancestry3 having neither beginning of days nor end of life1 but made a type of the ,son of ,god--this man ,melchizedek remains a priest for ever4 #jjg3jjd ,now think how great this priest-king must have been to whom ,abraham the patriarch gave a tenth part of the best of the spoil4 #jjg3jje ,and those of the descendants of ,levi who receive the priesthood are authorized by the ,law to take tithes from the people1 that is1 from their brethren1 though these have sprung from ,abraham4 #jjg3jjf ,but1 in this instance1 one who does not trace his origin from them takes tithes from ,abraham1 and pronounces a blessing on him to whom the promises belong4 #jjg3jjg ,and beyond all dispute it is always the inferior who is blessed by the superior4 #jjg3jjh ,moreover here frail mortal men receive tithes3 there one receives them about whom there is evidence that he is alive4 #jjg3jji ,and ,levi too--if ,i may so speak--pays tithes through ,abraham3 #jjg3jaj for ,levi was yet in the loins of his forefather when ,melchizedek met ,abraham4 #jjg3jaa ,now if the crowning blessing was attainable by means of the ,levitical priesthood--for as resting on this foundation the people received the ,law1 to which they are still subject-- what further need was there for a ,priest of a different kind to be raised up belonging to the order of ,melchizedek instead of being said to belong to the order of ,aaron8 #jjg3jab ,for when the priesthood changes1 a change of ,law also of necessity takes place4 #jjg3jac ,he1 however1 to whom that prophecy refers is associated with a different tribe1 not one member of which has anything to do with the altar4 #jjg3jad ,for it is undeniable that our ,lord sprang from ,judah1 a tribe of which ,moses said nothing in connection with priests4 #jjg3jae ,and this is still more abundantly clear when we read that it is as belonging to the order of ,melchizedek that a priest of a different kind is to arise1 #jjg3jaf and hold ,his office not in obedience to any temporary ,law1 but by virtue of an indestructible ,life4 #jjg3jag ,for the words are in evidence1 ,thou art a priest for ever1 belonging to the order of ,melchizedek4 #jjg3jah ,on the one hand we have here the abrogation of an earlier code because it was weak and ineffective-- #jjg3jai for the ,law brought no perfect blessing--but on the other hand we have the bringing in of a new and better hope by means of which we draw near to ,god4 #jjg3jbj ,and since it was not without an oath being taken-- #jjg3jba for these men hold office without any oath having been taken1 but ,he holds it attested by an oath from ,him who said to ,him1 ,the ,lord has sworn and will not recall ,his words1 ,thou art a ,priest for ever-- #jjg3jbb so much the more also is the ,covenant of which ,jesus has become the guarantor1 a better covenant4 #jjg3jbc ,and they have been appointed priests many in number1 because death prevents their continuance in office3 #jjg3jbd but ,he1 because ,he continues for ever1 has a priesthood which does not pass to any successor4 #jjg3jbe ,hence too ,he is able to save to the uttermost those who come to ,god through ,him1 seeing that ,he ever lives to plead for them4 #jjg3jbf ,moreover we needed just such a ,high ,priest as this-- holy1 guileless1 undefiled1 far removed from sinful men and exalted above the heavens2 #jjg3jbg who1 unlike other ,high ,priests1 is not under the necessity of offering up sacrifices day after day1 first for ,his own sins1 and afterwards for those of the people2 for this latter thing ,he did once for all when ,he offered up ,himself4 #jjg3jbh ,for the ,law constitutes men ,high ,priests--men with all their infirmity--but the utterance of the oath1 which came later than the ,law1 constitutes ,high ,priest a ,son who has been made for ever perfect4 #jjh3jja ,now in connexion with what we have been saying the chief point is that we have a ,high ,priest who has taken ,his seat at the right hand of the throne of ,god's ,majesty in the heavens1 #jjh3jjb and ministers in the ,holy place and in the true tabernacle which not man1 but the ,lord pitched4 #jjh3jjc ,every ,high ,priest1 however1 is appointed to offer both bloodless gifts and sacrifices4 ,therefore this ,high ,priest also must have some offering to present4 #jjh3jjd ,if then ,he were still on earth1 ,he would not be a priest at all1 since here there are already those who present the offerings in obedience to the ,law1 #jjh3jje and serve a copy and type of the heavenly things1 just as ,moses was divinely instructed when about to build the tabernacle4 ,for ,god said1 ,see that you make everything in imitation of the pattern shown you on the mountain4 #jjh3jjf ,but1 as a matter of fact1 the ministry which ,christ has obtained is all the nobler a ministry1 in that ,he is at the same time the negotiator of a sublimer covenant1 based upon sublimer promises4 #jjh3jjg ,for if that first ,covenant had been free from imperfection1 there would have been no attempt to introduce another4 #jjh3jjh ,for1 being dissatisfied with ,his people1 ,god says1 ,there are days coming1' says the ,lord1 ,when ,i will establish with the house of ,israel and with the house of ,judah a new ,covenant-- #jjh3jji a ,covenant unlike the one which ,i made with their forefathers on the day when ,i took them by the hand to lead them out from the land of ,egypt2 for they would not remain faithful to that4' ,so ,i turned from them1' says the ,lord4 #jjh3jaj ,but this is the ,covenant that ,i will covenant with the house of ,israel after those days1' says the ,lord3 ,i will put ,my laws into their minds and will write them upon their hearts4 ,and ,i will indeed be their ,god and they shall be ,my ,people4 #jjh3jaa ,and there shall be no need for them to teach each one his fellow citizen and each one his brother1 saying1 ,know the ,lord4 ,for all will know ,me from the least of them to the greatest2 #jjh3jab ,because ,i will be merciful to their wrongdoings1 and their sins ,i will remember no longer4' #jjh3jac ,by using the words1 a new ,covenant1 ,he has made the first one obsolete2 but whatever is decaying and showing signs of old age is not far from disappearing altogether4 #jji3jja ,now even the first ,covenant had regulations for divine worship1 and had also its sanctuary--a sanctuary belonging to this world4 #jji3jjb ,for a sacred tent was constructed--the outer one1 in which were the lamp and the table and the presented loaves2 and this is called the ,holy place4 #jji3jjc ,and behind the second veil was a sacred tent called the ,holy of holies4 #jji3jjd ,this had a censer of gold1 and the ark of the ,covenant lined with gold and completely covered with gold1 and in it were a gold vase which held the manna1 and ,aaron's rod which budded and the tables of the ,covenant4 #jji3jje ,and above the ark were the ,cherubim denoting ,god's glorious presence and overshadowing the ,mercy-seat4 ,but ,i cannot now speak about all these in detail4 #jji3jjf ,these arrangements having long been completed1 the priests1 when conducting the divine services1 continually enter the outer tent4 #jji3jjg ,but into the second1 the ,high ,priest goes only on one day of the year1 and goes alone1 taking with him blood1 which he offers on his own behalf and on account of the sins which the people have ignorantly committed4 #jji3jjh ,and the lesson which the ,holy ,spirit teaches is this-- that the way into the true ,holy place is not yet open so long as the outer tent still remains in existence4 #jji3jji ,and this is a figure--for the time now present--answering to which both gifts and sacrifices are offered1 unable though they are to give complete freedom from sin to him who ministers4 #jji3jaj ,for their efficacy depends only on meats and drinks and various washings1 ceremonies pertaining to the body and imposed until a time of reformation4 #jji3jaa ,but ,christ appeared as a ,high ,priest of the blessings that are soon to come by means of the greater and more perfect ,tent of worship1 a tent which has not been built with hands-- that is to say does not belong to this material creation-- #jji3jab and once for all entered the ,holy place1 taking with ,him not the blood of goats and calves1 but ,his own blood1 and thus procuring eternal redemption for us4 #jji3jac ,for if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who have contracted defilement make them holy so as to bring about ceremonial purity1 #jji3jad how much more certainly shall the blood of ,christ1 who strengthened by the eternal ,spirit offered ,himself to ,god1 free from blemish1 purify your consciences from lifeless works for you to serve the ever-living ,god8 #jji3jae ,and because of this ,he is the negotiator of a new ,covenant1 in order that1 since a life has been given in atonement for the offences committed under the first ,covenant1 those who have been called may receive the eternal inheritance which has been promised to them4 #jji3jaf ,for where there is a legal will1' there must also be a death brought forward in evidence--the death of him who made it4 #jji3jag ,and a will is only of force in the case of a deceased person1 being never of any avail so long as he who made it lives4 #jji3jah ,accordingly we find that the first ,covenant was not inaugurated without blood4 #jji3jai ,for when ,moses had proclaimed to all the people every commandment contained in the ,law1 he took the blood of the calves and of the goats and with them water1 scarlet wool and hyssop1 and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people1 #jji3jbj saying1 ,this is the blood which confirms the ,covenant that ,god has made binding upon you4 #jji3jba ,and in the same way he also sprinkled blood upon the ,tent of worship and upon all the vessels used in the ministry4 #jji3jbb ,indeed we may almost say that in obedience to the ,law everything is sprinkled with blood1 and that apart from the outpouring of blood there is no remission of sins4 #jji3jbc ,it was needful therefore that the copies of the things in ,heaven should be cleansed in this way1 but that the heavenly things themselves should be cleansed with more costly sacrifices4 #jji3jbd ,for not into a ,holy place built by men's hands--a mere copy of the reality--did ,christ enter1 but ,he entered ,heaven itself1 now to appear in the presence of ,god on our behalf4 #jji3jbe ,nor did ,he enter for the purpose of many times offering ,himself in sacrifice1 just as the ,high ,priest enters the ,holy place1 year after year1 taking with him blood not his own4 #jji3jbf ,in that case ,christ would have needed to suffer many times1 from the creation of the world onwards2 but as a matter of fact ,he has appeared once for all1 at the ,close of the ,ages1 in order to do away with sin by the sacrifice of ,himself4 #jji3jbg ,and since it is reserved for all mankind once to die1 and afterwards to be judged2 #jji3jbh so the ,christ also1 having been once offered in sacrifice in order that ,he might bear the sins of many1 will appear a second time1 separated from sin1 to those who are eagerly expecting ,him1 to make their salvation complete4 #jaj3jja ,for1 since the ,law exhibits only an outline of the blessings to come and not a perfect representation of the things themselves1 the priests can never1 by repeating the same sacrifices which they continually offer year after year1 give complete freedom from sin to those who draw near4 #jaj3jjb ,for then would not the sacrifices have ceased to be offered1 because the consciences of the worshippers--who in that case would now have been cleansed once for all--would no longer be burdened with sins8 #jaj3jjc ,but in those sacrifices sins are recalled to memory year after year4 #jaj3jjd ,for it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins4 #jaj3jje ,that is why1 when ,he comes into the world1 ,he says1 ,sacrifice and offering ,thou has not desired1 but a body ,thou hast prepared for ,me4 #jaj3jjf ,in whole burnt-offerings and in sin-offerings ,thou hast taken no pleasure4 #jaj3jjg ,then ,i said1 ,i have come--in the roll of the book it is written concerning ,me--to do ,thy will1 ,o ,god4' #jaj3jjh ,after saying the words ,i have just quoted1 ,sacrifices and offerings or whole burnt-offerings and sin-offerings ,thou hast not desired or taken pleasure in--all such being offered in obedience to the ,law-- #jaj3jji ,he then adds1 ,i have come to do ,thy will4 ,he does away with the first in order to establish the second4 #jaj3jaj ,it is through that divine will that we have been set free from sin1 through the offering of ,jesus ,christ as our sacrifice once for all4 #jaj3jaa ,and while every priest stands ministering1 day after day1 and constantly offering the same sacrifices--though such can never rid us of our sins-- #jaj3jab this ,priest1 on the contrary1 after offering for sins a single sacrifice of perpetual efficacy1 took ,his seat at ,god's right hand1 #jaj3jac waiting from that time onward until ,his enemies be put as a footstool under ,his feet4 #jaj3jad ,for by a single offering ,he has for ever completed the blessing for those whom ,he is setting free from sin4 #jaj3jae ,and the ,holy ,spirit also gives us ,his testimony2 for when ,he had said1 #jaj3jaf ,this is the ,covenant that ,i will make with them after those days1' says the ,lord3 ,i will put ,my laws upon their hearts and will write them on their minds2' #jaj3jag ,he adds1 ,and their sins and offences ,i will remember no longer4 #jaj3jah ,but where these have been forgiven no further offering for sin is required4 #jaj3jai ,since then1 brethren1 we have free access to the ,holy place through the blood of ,jesus1 #jaj3jbj by the new and ever-living way which ,he opened up for us through the rending of the veil--that is to say1 of ,his earthly nature-- #jaj3jba and since we have a great ,priest who has authority over the house of ,god1 #jaj3jbb let us draw near with sincerity and unfaltering faith1 having had our hearts sprinkled1 once for all1 from consciences oppressed with sin1 and our bodies bathed in pure water4 #jaj3jbc ,let us hold firmly to an unflinching avowal of our hope1 for ,he is faithful who gave us the promises4 #jaj3jbd ,and let us bestow thought on one another with a view to arousing one another to brotherly love and right conduct2 #jaj3jbe not neglecting--as some habitually do--to meet together1 but encouraging one another1 and doing this all the more since you can see the day of ,christ approaching4 #jaj3jbf ,for if we wilfully persist in sin after having received the full knowledge of the truth1 there no longer remains in reserve any other sacrifice for sins4 #jaj3jbg ,there remains nothing but a certain awful expectation of judgement1 and the fury of a fire which before long will devour the enemies of the truth4 #jaj3jbh ,any one who bids defiance to the ,law of ,moses is put to death without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses4 #jaj3jbi ,how much severer punishment1 think you1 will he be held to deserve who has trampled under foot the ,son of ,god1 has not regarded as holy that ,covenant-blood with which he was set free from sin1 and has insulted the ,spirit from whom comes grace8 #jaj3jcj ,for we know who it is that has said1 ,vengeance belongs to ,me3 ,i will pay back2 and again1 ,the ,lord will be ,his people's judge4 #jaj3jca ,it is an awful thing to fall into the hands of the ever-living ,god4 #jaj3jcb ,but continually recall to mind the days now past1 when on being first enlightened you went through a great conflict and many sufferings4 #jaj3jcc ,this was partly through allowing yourselves to be made a public spectacle amid reproaches and persecutions1 and partly through coming forward to share the sufferings of those who were thus treated4 #jaj3jcd ,for you not only showed sympathy with those who were imprisoned1 but you even submitted with joy when your property was taken from you1 being well aware that you have in your own selves a more valuable possession and one which will remain4 #jaj3jce ,therefore do not cast from you your confident hope1 for it will receive a vast reward4 #jaj3jcf ,for you stand in need of patient endurance1 so that1 as the result of having done the will of ,god1 you may receive the promised blessing4 #jaj3jcg ,for there is still but a short time and then ,the coming ,one will come and will not delay4 #jaj3jch ,but it is by faith that ,my righteous servant shall live2 and if he shrinks back1 ,my soul takes no pleasure in him4 #jaj3jci ,but we are not people who shrink back and perish1 but are among those who believe and gain possession of their souls4 #jaa3jja ,now faith is a well-grounded assurance of that for which we hope1 and a conviction of the reality of things which we do not see4 #jaa3jjb ,for by it the saints of old won ,god's approval4 #jaa3jjc ,through faith we understand that the worlds came into being1 and still exist1 at the command of ,god1 so that what is seen does not owe its existence to that which is visible4 #jaa3jjd ,through faith ,abel offered to ,god a more acceptable sacrifice than ,cain did1 and through this faith he obtained testimony that he was righteous1 ,god giving the testimony by accepting his gifts2 and through it1 though he is dead1 he still speaks4 #jaa3jje ,through faith ,enoch was taken from the earth so that he did not see death1 and he could not be found1 because ,god had taken him2 for before he was taken we have evidence that he truly pleased ,god4 #jaa3jjf ,but where there is no faith it is impossible truly to please ,him2 for the man who draws near to ,god must believe that there is a ,god and that ,he proves ,himself a rewarder of those who earnestly try to find ,him4 #jaa3jjg ,through faith ,noah1 being divinely taught about things as yet unseen1 reverently gave heed and built an ark for the safety of his family1 and by this act he condemned the world1 and became an heir of the righteousness which depends on faith4 #jaa3jjh ,through faith ,abraham1 upon being called to leave home and go into a land which he was soon to receive for an inheritance1 obeyed2 and he went out1 not knowing where he was going to4 #jaa3jji ,through faith he came and made his home for a time in a land which had been promised to him1 as if in a foreign country1 living in tents together with ,isaac and ,jacob1 sharers with him in the same promise2 #jaa3jaj for he continually looked forward to the city which has the foundations1 whose architect and builder is ,god4 #jaa3jaa ,through faith even ,sarah herself received strength to become a mother--although she was past the time of life for this-- because she judged ,him faithful who had given the promise4 #jaa3jab ,and thus there sprang from one man1 and him practically dead1 a nation like the stars of the sky in number1 and like the sands on the sea shore which cannot be counted4 #jaa3jac ,all these died in the possession of faith4 ,they had not received the promised blessings1 but had seen them from a distance and had greeted them1 and had acknowledged themselves to be foreigners and strangers here on earth2 #jaa3jad for men who acknowledge this make it manifest that they are seeking elsewhere a country of their own4 #jaa3jae ,and if they had cherished the remembrance of the country they had left1 they would have found an opportunity to return2 #jaa3jaf but1 as it is1 we see them eager for a better land1 that is to say1 a heavenly one4 ,for this reason ,god is not ashamed to be called their ,god1 for ,he has now prepared a city for them4 #jaa3jag ,through faith ,abraham1 as soon as ,god put him to the test1 offered up ,isaac4 ,yes1 he who had joyfully welcomed the promises was on the point of sacrificing his only son #jaa3jah with regard to whom he had been told1 ,it is through ,isaac that your posterity shall be traced4 #jaa3jai ,for he reckoned that ,god is even able to raise a man up from among the dead1 and1 figuratively speaking1 it was from among the dead that he received ,isaac again4 #jaa3jbj ,through faith ,isaac blessed ,jacob and ,esau1 even in connexion with things soon to come4 #jaa3jba ,through faith ,jacob1 when dying1 blessed each of ,joseph's sons1 and1 leaning on the top of his staff1 worshipped ,god4 #jaa3jbb ,through faith ,joseph1 when he was near his end1 made mention of the departure of the descendants of ,israel1 and gave orders about his own body4 #jaa3jbc ,through faith the child ,moses was hid for three months by his parents1 because they saw his rare beauty2 and the king's edict had no terror for them4 #jaa3jbd ,through faith ,moses1 when he grew to manhood1 refused to be known as ,pharaoh's daughter's son1 #jaa3jbe having determined to endure ill-treatment along with the people of ,god rather than enjoy the short-lived pleasures of sin2 #jaa3jbf because he deemed the reproaches which he might meet with in the service of the ,christ to be greater riches than all the treasures of ,egypt2 for he fixed his gaze on the coming reward4 #jaa3jbg ,through faith he left ,egypt1 not being frightened by the king's anger2 for he held on his course as seeing the unseen ,one4 #jaa3jbh ,through faith he instituted the ,passover1 and the sprinkling with blood so that the destroyer of the firstborn might not touch the ,israelites4 #jaa3jbi ,through faith they passed through the ,red ,sea as though they were passing over dry land1 but the ,egyptians1 when they tried to do the same1 were swallowed up4 #jaa3jcj ,through faith the walls of ,jericho fell to the ground after being surrounded for seven days4 #jaa3jca ,through faith the notorious sinner ,rahab did not perish along with the disobedient1 for she had welcomed the spies and had sheltered them4 #jaa3jcb ,and why need ,i say more8 ,for time will fail me if ,i tell the story of ,gideon1 ,barak1 ,samson1 ,jephthah1 and of ,david and ,samuel and the ,prophets2 #jaa3jcc men who1 as the result of faith1 conquered whole kingdoms1 brought about true justice1 obtained promises from ,god1 stopped lions' mouths1 #jaa3jcd deprived fire of its power1 escaped being killed by the sword1 out of weakness were made strong1 became mighty in war1 put to flight foreign armies4 #jaa3jce ,women received back their dear ones alive from the dead2 and others were put to death with torture1 refusing the deliverance offered to them--that they might secure a better resurrection4 #jaa3jcf ,others again were tested by cruel mockery and by scourging2 yes1 and by chains and imprisonment4 #jaa3jcg ,they were stoned1 they were sawn asunder1 they were tried by temptation1 they were killed with the sword4 ,they went from place to place in sheepskins or goatskins1 enduring want1 oppression and cruelty4 #jaa3jch 7,they were men of whom the world was not worthy47 ,they wandered across deserts and mountains1 or hid themselves in caves and in holes in the ground4 #jaa3jci ,and although by their faith all these people won ,god's approval1 none of them received the fulfilment of ,his great promise2 #jaa3jdj for ,god had provided for them and us something better1 so that apart from us they were not to attain to full blessedness4 #jab3jja ,therefore1 surrounded as we are by such a vast cloud of witnesses1 let us fling aside every encumbrance and the sin that so readily entangles our feet4 ,and let us run with patient endurance the race that lies before us1 #jab3jjb simply fixing our gaze upon ,jesus1 our ,prince ,leader in the faith1 who will also award us the prize4 ,he1 for the sake of the joy which lay before ,him1 patiently endured the cross1 looking with contempt upon its shame1 and afterwards seated ,himself-- where ,he still sits--at the right hand of the throne of ,god4 #jab3jjc ,therefore1 if you would escape becoming weary and faint-hearted1 compare your own sufferings with those of ,him who endured such hostility directed against ,him by sinners4 #jab3jjd ,in your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted so as to endanger your lives2 #jab3jje and you have quite forgotten the encouraging words which are addressed to you as sons1 and which say1 ,my son1 do not think lightly of the ,lord's discipline1 and do not faint when ,he corrects you2 #jab3jjf for those whom the ,lord loves ,he disciplines3 and ,he scourges every son whom ,he acknowledges4 #jab3jjg ,the sufferings that you are enduring are for your discipline4 ,god is dealing with you as sons2 for what son is there whom his father does not discipline8 #jab3jjh ,and if you are left without discipline1 of which every true son has had a share1 that shows that you are bastards1 and not true sons4 #jab3jji ,besides this1 our earthly fathers used to discipline us and we treated them with respect1 and shall we not be still more submissive to the ,father of our spirits1 and live8 #jab3jaj ,it is true that they disciplined us for a few years according as they thought fit2 but ,he does it for our certain good1 in order that we may become sharers in ,his own holy character4 #jab3jaa ,now1 at the time1 discipline seems to be a matter not for joy1 but for grief2 yet it afterwards yields to those who have passed through its training a result full of peace--namely1 righteousness4 #jab3jab ,therefore strengthen the drooping hands and paralysed knees1 #jab3jac and make straight paths for your feet1 so that what is lame may not be put entirely out of joint #jab3jad but may rather be restored4 ,persistently strive for peace with all men1 and for that growth in holiness apart from which no one will see the ,lord4 #jab3jae ,be carefully on your guard lest there be any one who falls back from the grace of ,god2 lest any root bearing bitter fruit spring up and cause trouble among you1 and through it the whole brotherhood be defiled2 #jab3jaf lest there be a fornicator1 or an ungodly person like ,esau1 who1 in return for a single meal1 parted with the birthright which belonged to him4 #jab3jag ,for you know that even afterwards1 when he wished to secure the blessing1 he was rejected2 for he found no opportunity for undoing what he had done1 though he sought the blessing earnestly with tears4 #jab3jah ,for you have not come to a material object all ablaze with fire1 and to gloom and darkness and storm and trumpet-blast and the sound of words-- #jab3jai a sound of such a kind that those who heard it entreated that no more should be added4 #jab3jbj ,for they could not endure the order which had been given1 ,even a wild beast1 if it touches the mountain1 shall be stoned to death2 #jab3jba and so terrible was the scene that ,moses said1 ,i tremble with fear4 #jab3jbb ,on the contrary you have come to ,mount ,zion1 and to the city of the ever-living ,god1 the heavenly ,jerusalem1 to countless hosts of angels1 #jab3jbc to the great festal gathering and ,church of the first-born1 whose names are recorded in ,heaven1 and to a ,judge who is ,god of all1 and to the spirits of righteous men made perfect1 #jab3jbd and to ,jesus the negotiator of a new ,covenant1 and to the sprinkled blood which speaks in more gracious tones than that of ,abel4 #jab3jbe ,be careful not to refuse to listen to ,him who is speaking to you4 ,for if they of old did not escape unpunished when they refused to listen to him who spoke on earth1 much less shall we escape who turn a deaf ear to ,him who now speaks from ,heaven4 #jab3jbf ,his voice then shook the earth1 but now we have ,his promise1 ,yet again ,i will1 once for all1 cause not only the earth to tremble1 but ,heaven also4 #jab3jbg ,here the words ,yet again1 once for all denote the removal of the things which can be shaken--created things--in order that the things which cannot be shaken may remain4 #jab3jbh ,therefore1 receiving1 as we now do1 a kingdom which cannot be shaken1 let us cherish thankfulness so that we may ever offer to ,god an acceptable service1 with godly reverence and awe4 #jab3jbi ,for our ,god is also a consuming fire4 #jac3jja ,let brotherly love always continue4 #jac3jjb ,do not neglect to show kindness to strangers2 for1 in this way1 some1 without knowing it1 have had angels as their guests4 #jac3jjc ,remember prisoners1 as if you were in prison with them2 and remember those suffering ill-treatment1 for you yourselves also are still in the body4 #jac3jjd ,let marriage be held in honour among all1 and let the marriage bed be unpolluted2 for fornicators and adulterers ,god will judge4 #jac3jje ,your lives should be untainted by love for money4 ,be content with what you have2 for ,god ,himself has said1 ,i will never1 never let go your hand3 ,i will never never forsake you4 #jac3jjf ,so that we fearlessly say1 ,the ,lord is my helper2 ,i will not be afraid3 what can man do to me8 #jac3jjg ,remember your former leaders--it was they who brought you ,god's ,message4 ,bear in mind how they ended their lives1 and imitate their faith4 #jac3jjh ,jesus ,christ is the same yesterday and to-day--yes1 and to the ages to come4 #jac3jji ,do not be drawn aside by all sorts of strange teaching2 for it is well to have the heart made stedfast through ,god's grace1 and not by special kinds of food1 from which those who scrupulously attend to them have derived no benefit4 #jac3jaj ,we ,christians have an altar from which the ministers of the ,jewish ,tent have no right to eat4 #jac3jaa ,for the bodies of those animals of which the blood is carried by the ,high ,priest into the ,holy place as an offering for sin1 are burned outside the camp4 #jac3jab ,and for this reason ,jesus also1 in order1 by ,his own blood1 to set the people free from sin1 suffered outside the gate4 #jac3jac ,therefore let us go to ,him outside the camp1 sharing the insults directed against ,him4 #jac3jad ,for we have no permanent city here1 but we are longing for the city which is soon to be ours4 #jac3jae ,through ,him1 then1 let us continually lay on the altar a sacrifice of praise to ,god1 namely1 the utterance of lips that give thanks to ,his ,name4 #jac3jaf ,and do not forget to be kind and liberal2 for with sacrifices of that sort ,god is greatly pleased4 #jac3jag ,obey your leaders and be submissive to them4 ,for they are keeping watch over your souls as those who will have to give account2 that they may do this with joy and not with lamentation4 ,for that would be of no advantage to you4 #jac3jah ,keep on praying for us2 for we are sure that we have clear consciences1 and we desire to live nobly in every respect4 #jac3jai ,i specially urge this upon you in order that ,i may be the more speedily restored to you4 #jac3jbj ,now may ,god who gives peace1 and brought ,jesus1 our ,lord1 up again from among the dead--even ,him who1 by virtue of the blood of the eternal ,covenant1 is the great ,shepherd of the sheep-- #jac3jba fully equip you with every grace that you may need for the doing of ,his will1 producing in us that which will truly please ,him through ,jesus ,christ4 ,to ,him be the glory to the ,ages of the ,ages6 ,amen4 #jac3jbb ,bear with me1 brethren1 when ,i thus exhort you2 for1 in fact1 it is but a short letter that ,i have written to you4 #jac3jbc ,you will rejoice to hear that our brother ,timothy has been set at liberty4 ,if he comes soon1 ,i will see you with him4 #jac3jbd ,greet all your leaders and all ,god's people4 ,the brethren from ,italy send you greetings4 #jac3jbe ,grace be with you all6 ,amen4
